Carnauba is a plant-based product, which comes from the Brazilian Palm tree – also known as the Carnauba Palm tree and the “Tree of Life.”  The fan-shaped leaves of this palm tree exude a waxy substance to protect the leaves.  The leaves are harvested and sun-dried, which allows the carnauba to crack and flake from the surface of the leaf, where it is shaken off and collected for processing.

  Carnauba based coatings are necessary when produce is being shipped to humid areas.  Changing conditions, such as moving in and out of cold storage, will often lead to condensation which will break down other wax coatings, causing white spots to form.  Carnauba waxes are very resistant to climatic fluctuations and humidity.

Shellac is an animal-based product, which comes from the lac beetle in India, Pakistan and Thailand.  The insect produces a gummy substance, which hardens into a protective coating called lac.  Shellac is often compared to honey from the honeybee.  Shellac coatings have a very fast drying time as measured against other coatings, making it easy to use in the production line. 

Shellac is sometimes the coating of choice for fruit being processed for distribution to areas that have low-humidity.  When shellac-coated products are shipped to areas of high humidity, white spots often appear on the produce.  Although this is merely a condition of appearance and not fruit quality, most customers object to this condition.   With Solutec’s newer technology in emulsion chemistry, shellac products have lost ground.
